ABOUT DOMESTIC VIOLENCE

Domestic violence is a pattern of abusive behavior used to gain or maintain power and control over another person in an intimate relationship. Abuse can happen to anyone regardless of age, race, gender, income, religion, or background, and it often extends beyond physical violence. Domestic violence may include emotional abuse, verbal threats, intimidation, financial control, isolation, stalking, sexual abuse, and coercive behaviors that create fear and dependency. Survivors are not alone, and support is available.

Understanding Abuse

Forms of Domestic Violence

Forms of Domestic Violence

Domestic violence is not caused by anger, stress, or relationship problems. Abuse is a deliberate pattern of behavior used to exert power and control over another person. Many abusive relationships involve cycles of tension, violence, reconciliation, and calm that can make it difficult for survivors to leave safely.

Abuse can take many forms, including physical violence, emotional manipulation, verbal intimidation, financial control, sexual abuse, stalking, digital harassment, and threats toward children, pets, or loved ones. Some forms of abuse may not leave visible injuries but can have lasting emotional and psychological effects.

Impact on Survivors & Families

Warning signs may include extreme jealousy, controlling behaviors, isolation from family and friends, monitoring communication, threats, intimidation, humiliation, destruction of property, or physical violence. Abuse often escalates over time and may become more dangerous when a survivor attempts to leave the relationship.

Domestic violence impacts every aspect of a survivor’s life, including emotional health, physical safety, financial stability, and overall well-being. Children exposed to violence in the home may also experience trauma, anxiety, depression, behavioral challenges, and long-term emotional effects.
